a report surfaced this morning about T-Mobile sending a memo to its sales staff that encourages them to sell against Apple’s iPhone beginning Sept. 21. Unsurprisingly, the memo confirmed T-Mobile would not be a carrier for the next-generation iPhone due out next month. Adding a bit to this morning’s story, TmoNews followed up with a new flyer that T-Mobile aims to show customers. AT&T Places Limit To Unlimited Data

Mike Trang likes to use his iPhone 4 as a GPS device, helping him get around in his job. Now and then, his younger cousins get ahold of it, and play some YouTube videos and games.

But in the past few weeks, there has been none of that, because AT&T Inc. put a virtual wheel clamp on his phone. Web pages wouldn't load and maps wouldn't render. Forget about YouTube videos — Trang's data speeds were reduced to dial-up levels.

"It basically makes my phone useless," said Trang, an Orange County, Calif. property manager.

AT&T Will 'FINALLY' Begin Offering iPhone Insurance for $4.99 Monthly

AT&T will finally stop discriminating against iPhone customers when it comes to insurance by offering the same coverage other devices receive for the same premium of $4.99 monthly.

According to a report, AT&T posted notification to its customers that effective July 17, 2011, all iPhone models will be eligible for the standard AT&T Mobile Insurance program. The fine print: “Customers can only enroll within 30 days of a new activation or upgrade, prior activations or upgrades outside of 30 days are not eligible.” The insurance will cover an iPhone “against loss, theft, accidental physical or liquid damage, and mechanical and/or electrical failure after the manufacturer’s warranty period has expired.” It is unclear if 3G iPads will be given the same opportunity for coverage.

iPhone 4S Could Launch Simultaneously On AT&T, Verizon… And Sprint!

When the fifth-generation iPhone launches later this year, with it may come its third U.S. carrier, as sources now report that a Sprint iPhone is in advanced testing.

The device is currently being tested in Apple’s “black labs,” as well as with Sprint’s research & development department, and looks identical to the iPhone 4, according to sources for 9to5 Mac.

When it arrives on Sprint it will be capable of the same 3G wireless standards used in the iPhone today, and while the sources claim that Apple is currently developing an iPhone compatible with 4G networks, this is unlikely to launch before 2012. This ties in with previous rumors that the fifth-generation iPhone – due to launch later this year – will be labelled the iPhone 4S and will carry a wireless chip capable of connecting tomultiple carriers.

Apple reportedly set up Sprint-compatible cell towers at its Cupertino campus in late 2010, and a recent indication that the company was working with Sprint came from an Apple job listing based in Kansas City – the hometown of Sprint’s headquarters.

In addition to these claims is a rather peculiar report from Talk Android, which claims that a Sprint iPhone is on its way and that it will be dual-band with support for T-Mobile. This is where it gets weird, however: The report also claims that Apple will alternate iPhone releases between carriers so that with every generation there is support for different networks. For example, the iPhone 5 may support AT&T and Verizon, the iPhone 6 may support Sprint and T-Mobile… and so forth. via cultofmac

AT&T To Buy T-Mobile And What It Could Mean For Customers

NEW YORK -- AT&T Inc. has agreed to buy T-Mobile USA for $39 billion, but the deal isn't set to close until a year from now, and it will likely face tough regulatory scrutiny. Here's what a completed deal could mean for customers:

- Bigger choice of phones for T-Mobile subscribers. T-Mobile, as a much smaller carrier than AT&T, doesn't get as many exclusives on top-line phones, and it doesn't have the iPhone. This won't be a big benefit to T-Mobile subscribers who don't have contracts - if they want the iPhone today, they can sign up with AT&T or Verizon Wireless. But subscribers under contract would find it easier to upgrade to an iPhone.

AT&T going after iPhone users who jailbreak to avoid tethering fees?

It would seem that AT&T is finding new ways to discourage people from jailbreaking their device in order to avoid paying for a tethering plan that come in $15, $25 and $45 a month varieties. Mac blogs are abuzz with a purported text and email messages that the carrier has allegedly sent out to some customers. It would appear the communication targets owners of jailbroken devices running unsanctioned MyWi app that enables Internet tethering over WiFi, USB and Bluetooth, but it’s possible the carrier as well reached out to those using the Personal Hotspot feature via one of the official tethering plans.

AT&T’s text message looks legit to us and even more so their email message included below. The email opens with the sinister-sounding “we’ve notice your service plan may need updating” line. We can certainly imagine AT&T taking this step to protect their business and the technology certainly makes it easy to pinpoint those cheap jailbreakers unwilling to pay for those exorbitant tethering fees through their nose. The iPad 2

Apple has just made its second-generation iPad official! It features a dual-core A5 chip and, finally, cameras, both front and rear! The new CPU is said to be up to twice as fast, with graphics performance up to nine times better than on the original iPad, while power requirements have been kept the same. Battery life is, consequently, unaltered, with Apple promising 10 hours. Pricing, too, has been left unchanged, starting at $499. The new tablet will come with an HDMI output, which will set you back $39 for the requisite dongle, but we've yet to hear any rumblings of Thunderbolt connectivity.

There is a new cover for the device, which is best defined by Steve Jobs himself: "We designed the case right along side the product. It's not a case -- it's a cover." Basically, it's a magnetic flap that protects the front and automatically wakes and puts the device to sleep according to whether it's open or closed. Guess we know what that proximity sensor was about now. These Smart Covers will cost $39 in plastic or $69 if you opt for leather.

The iPad 2 is 33 percent thinner than its predecessor, at a mind-melting 8.8mm, and will ship in two hues: white and black. It'll be available on both AT&T and Verizon, and all variants start shipping on March 11th.

In terms of new software, Apple's launching iOS 4.3 alongside the new iPad and bringing with it much improved Safari performance as well as FaceTime and Photo Booth apps specifically for the newly camera-enriched iPad. Personal Hotspot capabilities are also arriving in the latest version of the OS, but they'll be exclusive to the iPhone 4, so you won't be able to share your 3G iPad's connection.
