BlackBerry PlayBook Delayed By iPad 2

DigiTimes reports that RIM, manufacturer of the BlackBerry PlayBook, may have had to delay the launch of their tablet by an entire month because of Apple's demand for touch panels for the iPad 2.

Apple, thanks to it's vast reserves of cold, hard cash, can ore-pay for its components, granting them priority over companies who must purchase on credit or post-pay for their components. The PlayBook, which will start selling at $499 (for a 7-inch tablet) is scheduled to be released on April 19th, over one month after the release of the iPad 2.

RIM planning to announce new BlackBerry Bold with touchscreen and web-friendly OS?

The Blackberry Storm wasn’t so hot as the SurePresstouchscreen didn’t do very well. The Storm 2 seems to be doing a little better. But it looks like RIM has a new touchscreen device. The rumors are pointing to something along the lines of the Bold editions.

This one would have a full Query Keypad and incorporate a touch-sensitive landscape display. RIM also apparently intends to release a new web-friendly OS with this device. True or not, we will know soon.

Nokia N920 Internet Tablet

The Nokia N900 might have just been released, but hot on its heels is its successor, the Nokia N920 Internet Tablet. It showed up at the Nokiaport.de forums.

The photo appears to be real and we know that the device will feature a 4.13″ capacitivetouchscreen display in a thin body. And yes, no sign of a physical keyboard. We don’t have any info on its release date, but don’t expect it for awhile. We will likely see it at Mobile World Congress 2010.

Death Of The Sidekick

Microsoft has fessed up to losing online the contacts, photos and personal data of T-Mobile Sidekick users. Owners of these message-heavy phones were already up in arms due to a data outage that began last weekend and persisted through the week, but it seems that in fixing the problem, Microsoft’s servers lost all personal information that wasn’t stored locally on users’ phones. T-Mobile, in a message on its Web site, said that a problem with Microsoft’s servers was “almost certainly” to blame, and there’s little chance that either company can salvage any of the lost personal data.

For most T-Mobile subscribers, the situation isn’t as bad as it sounds, because most people do store their data locally on a phone, not up in the cloud. Spokespeople from T-Mobile and Microsoft told the Wall Street Journal that you’re most at risk for data loss if you let your battery drain or removed it to reset the phone. However, the device’s online service is intended to save your data if something happens to your phone, so if you happen to be one of those people, you’re out of luck. The bigger issue, regardless of phone or carrier, is whether you can trust your data to someone else’s servers. This doesn’t inspire confidence.
