Apple Announces September 12th iPhone event: ‘It’s almost here’

Apple has announced a media event for Wednesday, September 12th. Above is the invitation that reads “it’s almost here”. Obviously, the huge ’5′ shadow seems to indicate that the new iPhone will be called the ‘iPhone 5′.

Apple will be demoing a new version of its iPhone at this event. The new iPhone is rumored to include a thinner design, a taller, four-inch display, improved internal hardware, and more. Apple will also likely detail the final pieces of iOS 6 at this event. An event for a smaller iPad is rumored for sometime in October. 9to5mac

Flipboard Comes To iPhone & iPod Touch

iMessage Coming to Mac OS X?

iMessage on OS X Lion is back in the news. We had previously reported that iMessage might be integrated into the Mac OS iChat application based on strings of code found in Lion’s iChat. However a report from last night indicates that the decision to integrate iMessage into iChat or create a standalone client not been finalized. Both are reported possibilities that are being simultaneous development.

iMessage is Apple’s new messaging solution for devices running iOS 5. It allows user to send SMS-like messages using data, rather than a text messaging plan. The service is similar to Blackberry’s BBM. Integrating OS X Lion with iMessage would allow users to send iMessages to iOS 5 devices from a Mac.

iOS5 Has Been Jailbroken... Not Quite Ready For The Public

Known jailbreak developer and iPhone Dev-Team leader MuscleNerd revealed on Twitter that the iPhone 4S and iPad 2 have finally been jailbroken and installed with Cydia, although the jailbreak is still in its early stages ant not yet ready for the public.

The Day iOS5 Drops w| iMessage, BlackBerry Having Technical Difficulties

(CNN) -- Millions of BlackBerry users remained without service on Wednesday as a three-day outage continued.

The service outage started on Monday with customers in the Middle East, Europe and Africa -- before spreading to South America on Tuesday. On Wednesday morning, reports suggested it had spread to some BlackBerry users in North America.

Apple announces refreshed Nano lineup | Available Today

Apple’s Phil Schiller just announced slightly refreshed iPod nanos. It appears to be largely the same design as the current nano with an altered UI allowing you to swipe through large icons. They’ve also included improved Nike+ fitness features, and 16 new watch faces.

The iPod nano will be available today in seven colors for $129 for 8GB and $149 for 16GB.

Apple refreshes iPod Touch: Now in white, 8GB model dropped to $199 | available October 12

Apple’s marketing honcho Phil Schiller took it upon himself to unveil a refreshed iPod touch lineup, which now includes both black and white models, plus a new breakthrough price of just $199. The iPod touch is Apple’s “most popular iPod”, Schiller told the crowd, adding this:

It’s thin, it has the Retina Display. HD video. Gyro. Amazing gameplay. It’s the most popular music player, and the #1 portable game player.
The revamped models look the same as the fourth-generation iPod touch, which was available only in black. The new iPod touches now come in both black and white. As mentioned, the entry-level 8GB version now starts out at just $199. Apple is clearly positioning this device as a portable gaming machine, aiming with it directly at Sony and Nintendo.

So, the new iPod touch lineup now looks like this: The 8/16/32GB white or black iPod touch for $199/$299/$399. It goes on sale October 12.

iOS 5 is coming October 12 as a free update

iOS is coming next Wednesday, October 12, Scott Forstall just said at the “Let’s talk iPhone” event in Apple’s Cupertino headquarters. We’re also expecting the new iPhone to go on sale October 14-ish or around that time. Mark your calendar and clean up and back up personal information on your iOS devices to make a major upgrade as painless as possible come next Wednesday. The software will roll out to all devices October 12, he said. It will be a free update, compatible with the iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, the original iPad, iPad 2 and the third- and fourth-generation iPod touch.

Instagram v2.0 Update

Instagram has released a huge update today with Version 2.0 in what they’re calling one of the “largest revamps” to the app’s core camera technology since it launched. Along with a UI overhaul, the app now supports images with a resolution up to 1936×1936 on the iPhone 4 (in your camera roll, not on Instagram), in comparison to the 612×612 prior to the update.

As part of a brand new camera UI, the most impressive feature is the new “live filters”. They’ve taken the old filters and rewritten them to be “200x faster”, allowing you to instantly apply effects in real-time within the camera UI. Near-Final iOS 5 Build In Final Stages Of Carrier Testing

As the release of the iPhone 5, iOS 5 and iCloud creep ever closer, a new report claims that a near-final version of iOS 5 is already in the final stages of testing with wireless carriers.

The significance of this is that once wireless carriers finish their testing of the iOS 5 firmware, the device could launch on wireless networks at almost any point from them on. This should be taken as a strong sign that iOS 5 (and the iPhone 5) are very near to public release.

RIM's Stock Tumbles at the Threat of Apple's iMessage

Amidst all the predictions and rumours in the weeks leading up to Apple’s iOS 5 announcement on Monday, Apple somehow managed to keep possibly one of the most significant new features well and truly hidden under its hat. According to MacRumors and Daring Fireball, iMessage was so secret that even Apple’s mobile carrier partners had to find out about it at the keynote speech, along with the rest of us! Since then, the announcement that Apple is essentially ushering in its own BBM-killer has sent shockwaves through the industry. There probably weren’t too many smiling faces at BlackBerry-maker RIM following Apple’s announcement on Monday, and as TechRadar reports, the news has already had a serious effect on RIM’s stocks, which fell to a four-year low on Tuesday, taking them below $37. As TechRadar notes, up until Apple’s announcement, BlackBerry Messenger was the only IM service of its type around, and very popular too.

According to Cult of Mac’s in-depth look at iMessage, it is not a standalone app, but in fact iMessages and SMS Texts combined into one app, Messages, meaning that you don’t have to switch between apps. According to Cult of Mac, Messages will automatically check whether or not the phone you’re trying to send an SMS message to is an iPhone with iOS 5 installed, and if it is, Messages will automatically send an iMessage instead of an SMS. The program will then update your Address Book, and a chat bubble will appear next to that person’s entry to indicate that they have iMessage. It will also give you the option to turn off SMS messaging altogether so that you only send iMessages, or vice versa.
